I don't think NYU is a reach school for you at all. You look very competitive. Don't worry, and be confident.

best of luck

I don't think NYU is a reach school for you at all. You look very competitive. Don't worry, and be confident.

best of luck

I'm very glad to see a confident person like you jslee1026. I think you have enough confidence for at least me as well. Soooo worried T_T - Just watched their recruitment video, my god.. amazing...

haha :) yea, NYU is an amazing school indeed.

But don't let your anxiety work against you. Concentrate on what you are doing right now. Forget about it. Just come to CollegeConfidential once a day to encourage others.

I didn't intend to create a "what are my chances?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!" "reply-you have no chance and period" anxiety filled cut-throat bad mouthing thread.

I wanted to have a thread dedicated to the transfer applicants to NYU who want to feel warm and fuzzy about this long and arduous journey to NYU.

:)

Everyone has good chances. Remember, those of you who come to this forum are probably better than the average applicant to NYU transfer admissions. We are all serious about this transfer and we know we've worked hard for this and we now want support from each other who are on the same boat. So don't be so disappointed seeing such great credentials that everyone has on my thread.

:) Good night

does anybody celebrate Halloween in the Village?

next time I get in some trouble, I want you to talk to be the person that calms the other person down.

OH MY LORD I AM SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS THREAD.

I am running about (or surfing about) like a headless chicken and freaking out about transfer apps.. especially to NYU.
Thanks so much for starting this thread!

I'll fill up the form asap and i hope to get feedback from you all! :)

This is driving me crazy!!! haha, i know you're all in the same boat. but i'm hopefully going to be in NYU in fall '07. I'm at Syracuse University, 3.4 gpa thus far, really great extra curriculars (newspaper, school's news station, internship with the senate, singing national anthem at basketball game), but at the same time i'm so worried something won't get me in. high school gpa was 3.5, sat's not good at all- 1200 (writing 650, math 550). HELP! haha

Jadan413 and satirist, don't worry! I hope this thread helps all of us here.

3.4 GPA from Syracuse is solid, perhaps above the average.
SATs and HS GPA don't matter as much as your college record.

Your crazy ECs will surely compensate any, if there is any, that could damage your chances. Are you having a senate to write a recommendation letter for you?

and what school are you applying to? (within NYU i mean)

Note that NYU does not consider SAT scores taken after HS graduation.

jslee, where did you read that? im a transfer applicant to stern (freshman in college) and if i don't take these SAT IIs i'll definitely be rejected. im taking a language and a science SAT II, because i did not take either course my senior year of high school, and was eventually waitlisted and ultimately rejected. i'm currently not taking a science nor language now either. do you really think the adcoms will simply disregard scores submitted from this november?

That is true. I called the admissions office a few times, and every answer was that before college standarized tests (SAT, ACT) are not taken because of it "measures how well you do in college" supposedly.

SAT II's are something I'm not too sure about. My school never really offered for me to take, so it wasn't something I worried about. They said it won't greatly affect it, but people that do have SAT II scores are more competitive than I am. So if you do take it now, I'm not sure if they'll accept it. The best you can do is call, or ask online on their forums.

New York University
Anticipated school you are applying to within NYU

College of Arts & Science

Transfer term: Fall 2007
Current School: Smith College
Current College GPA: semester I: 3.5 semester II: 4.0
HS GPA: 4.0
SAT1:
English:690
Writing:690
Math:550

ECs:Environmental Clubs- college, Theater- HS and college, HS- varsity sports every season, Oddysey of the Mind or its new name: Destination Imagination- world finalists, Amnesty International, Book Club

Reason: I thought I would graduate from Smith early. I took 3 extra classes while being there and they accepted two of my AP's. It was pretty hard with the extra work load and the clubs I was involved in. And it's a great school, but it really is where all fun goes to die. ITS SO BORING THERE! I want to be in the city... and I think I want to major in journalism. Problem is, I've never taken a journalism class or written for a school newspaper... So I don't think I'll get in. Plus, everyone here has such amazing stats, and journalism is soooo competitive. Another thing, I'm at Smith on financial aid/scholarship. I don't think I'll get anything at NYU. And being a journalism major i'll never make any money anyway. Right now, I'm taking a year off to work & pay off loans- I'm a software technician, I do day care on the weekends and I babysit- I work 55 hours a week. Does anyone know of a cheaper college w/journalism in NY?? Also, what are my chances?? Slim??

"If you took the SAT I, SAT II or ACT exams when in high school, you should have your official test scores sent directly to NYU from the testing agencies. However, if you are currently in college and have completed at least one full year of course work (roughly 30-32 credit hours)you should not retake the SAT's or take them now for the first time. We will not consider standardized test scores from exams you took while already enrolled in college.

However, if you did not take the standardized tests while enrolled in high school and have not yet completed one full-year of college course work you SHOULD make arrangements to participate in standardized testing and have your exam results released to NYU.

If you previously took the SAT exam it is NOT necessary to take the new SAT Reasoning Test for admission as a transfer student."

OK this is basically what he or she is saying:

If you took standardized exams while in HS, you should submit those scores NYU.
If you took them, AND you have completed at least 1 full college year, you should NOT re-take them.
If you have NOT taken, but you have NOT completed at least 1 full college year, you should take them.
If you have NOT taken, but you have completed at least 1 full college year, you should not take them.

SATs and ACTs are intended for HS students, not college students.

Different colleges have different transfer requirements, please look into it.

This is the case with NYU transfer admissions.

hehe LaLaLady, are you kidding?!

:) I think you will be a shoe-in!

But what do I know?! Anyway, your both college and HS records are outstanding.

Don't even worry about it.

These schools are not located in NYC but:

Northwestern
Georgetown

have good journalism programs

well, considering that i've only been in college for a couple of months now, i guess it wouldn't hurt to take the SAT IIs. (the only other IIs i have are for math 1 and 2).

I think you will be a shoe-in!

i don't think thats very good advice, especially considering that her chances aren't that amazing. i'd say 50/50 chance. nyu typically wants students with 1300+ SAT scores, which you don't have. I know people with 1280s that were either GSPed or told to attend a summer program for improving skills in which you are weak (basically nyu summer school), before they finally matriculated. i wouldn't say you're a shoo-in, sorry.

I'm going to be applying to arts and sciences, I want to pursue broadcast journalism eventually. Yeah, I'm going to have 2 people within my internship write letters of rec, so hopefully that will help! I didn't take the SAT II's in high school, is that a big deal?

Biggyboy,

That was totally my opinion after all :) And I still think she has very good chances

SATs do not matter to transfers as much as to Freshman.

She is applying to a Liberal Arts school of NYU (CAS) and CAS seems to slightly favor writing and verbal more so than they do with Math and Math 1 C or 2 C. (Journalism major)

She is coming from Smith. It is one of the top LACs. Her grades have improved quite dramatically from 3.5 to 4.0.

Doesn't everyone have at least 50/50 chance? It's either admit/reject.

I don't see why she isn't a competitive applicant. She is (everyone here) above the average applicant pool.

I am neither being un-realistic nor overly optimistic. After all, we are here to support each other, not trying to discourage anybody.

Also Biggyboy, whether you've taken SATIIs or not could affect your chances as a Freshman applicant to Stern. If you have not taken them already, and have demonstrated your competency through respective college courses at your current institution, you are not required to take them now.

LaLaLady, before you ask questions regarding transfer admissions to anyone here, you should first contact NYU admissions office.
As far as I know, since you've completed at least 1 full year of college work, you are not required to take the SATIIs now.
They would evaluate your competency based on your college record, not the SATs.

Hey Jslee, do you have AIM/MSN? Need to ask your opinion

I am afraid i don't have one :)

But you can send me private messages here if you want to be confidential

No, not everyone has a 50/50 chance. Some have better chances than others, some are below average applicants. When I said 50/50, I really meant 50/50. I know CAS is a liberal arts school, but scores in the 500s do not look good. However, she's coming from Smith and demonstrated she can handle competitive LAC work. So, yes, you never know..hence the 50/50. But come on, a shoo in? Thats pretty bad advice, especially if the applicant later finds out she wasn't admitted.

Thanks biggyboy and jslee1026 for responding to my post- I sort-of figured no one would. And yeah, i mean, a 500 sat is the kiss of death at alot of places. I feel like I owe smith for being so generous with me considering that. I only took the SATs once...and I got very existential during them, to calm myself down- I sort of zoned out throughout it. My sister got a perfect score... I'm pretty jealous.
Anyway, I'm going to apply and stuff, but do u all think it is REALLY worth $$$40,000. After 5 months of working full time in an office, I'm not so sure any college experience should be so expensive. And NYU financial aid is notoriously bad... A journalism major makes an average of 20,000 $ a year out of college. I dunno, I'm poor and confused. My mom is a single parent, I have 2 younger siblings...
Mostly, I'm wondering if everyone thinks a college experience is worth loads of debt??? And what about grad school- shouldn't that be the important thing? I just don't know...
