NYU Admission Letter and Scholarship Award Letter Received 3//8/10

i live in illinois and got mine two days ago.

i got 31 ACT.
tons of ec’s
did cancer research for a summer.

I am curious about whether Steinhardt has started to let RD applicants know yet. Has anyone heard?

We are also in Ohio , DD still waiting for RD Steinhardt.

No news yet in NH either.

Long Island, NY----still waiting

Recapping…sort of sounds like CAS’s MLK and DEAN are out. I’m hoping this means Presidential is next. Deliveries seem to have spanned a week or so the last couple of years (9-17 ish)…and this year seems to be pretty closely matching these dates. Sure doesn’t give one much time to sort out plane tickets uf they are lucky enough to be invited to the honors weekend…which it sounds like is March 27-28 this year. Well, whatever is meant to be - will be. Hope you all have mailboxes brimming with NYU letters this weekend. Cuz, these days…I don’t know how anyone can afford to go to college without some great scholarships/aid. Good luck to you all!

R12…,

What a great summary of results thus far. Thanks for the service to this community.

I agree that higher ed is far too expensive! We will likely not qualify for FA, so the MLK Scholarship will help (with approx half the cost). The wonderful thing is we did not even know there was such a scholarship and it turns out sonny wrote his essay and short answers tailored made for the award. I was stunned when I first saw the award, thinking that such an award would just be for Black or Hispanic candidates.

Evolving…congrats again on your son’s award. We won’t qualify for very much aid either BUT…it’s primarily because I have a business that actually made a profit. It’s an S corp so I have to report that as income…but it’s not…it DOUBLES my AGI, get it’s partly used to pay income tax, and the rest is mostly used to grow the business. So it’s frustrating because we CANNOT afford what it looks like we can. But…that doesn’t matter much with NYU anyway - so I’m just hoping against hope to creep in on the very end of possible merit aid. Daughter has some high stats…but we seem to end up outside of need or merit aid most places - yet still don’t have the money to pay. So…fingers crossed, it’s an anxious time. I sort of wish I’d never heard of CC…but I’ve learned SO much on here!

Another “well done” to your kiddo.

R12…,
I feel for you. You are obviously a hard working person, but your financial situation with the business and how the #s come through is disadvantageous. I know, because our family income changed (downward) for 2009, but we will be penalized for gains in the stock market (unfortunately with $ pulled out from home equity, yeah, our stupid mistake, hmm…, my better half’s mistake actually). So we look like we have more than we do.

Anyhow, your D must be a very strong candidate if she is anything like you. But it is all such a crapshoot! Except for the really outstanding, e.g. Siemens finalist, etc. Is your D’s first choice NYU or another school?

Sonny really wanted to be in NYC so the offer from NYU is very attractive (probably will be first choice even if Columbia College comes through - very big IF).

I live in IL and am still hoping for some good news…

I got some pretty hard to resist scholarships at other schools, and if by ANY chance I am lucky with NYU that would simply seal the deal for me.

Are scholarships other than MLK and DEAN given out? I could use the money too, but like above, it’s hard to prove through FAFSA, so financial aid does not look great for me.

If I had known about MLK, I would have talked a lot more about my community service in my essay/short answers =/

NYU is my dream… just hoping I get some money.

^ Yes, NYU offers many scholarships - MLK, Dean and Presidential are the most well-known but there’s several scholarships which are handed out to very few students so they’re not brought up on CC as much - like diversity scholarships and scholarships for specific programs/majors. I’m on a Women in Science scholarship and one of my friends is on a scholarship for women studying Comp Sci. There are random scholarships like for students majoring in Africana Studies or things like that. I’m sure Tisch/Steinhardt/Stern and other schools have their own things as well, but i don’t really know about those, to be honest.

Thanks, that’s good to know. I can still hope. What is the presidential scholarship?

Presidential = CAS. Top…3-5% of applicants are invited into the CAS honors program. I THINK most of them are offered a scholarship. BUT…those range from $1000 to $25000. Obviously, not many of the top would be offered. I have no CLUE how many of anything. There are a few others. The only one I’m familiar with is AnBryce. That is for ALL schools. They only give 3, and they’re very competitive. Must be first generation and it’s full tuition. At least all this is what I’ve come to learn/believe over the past year. I’ve seen some INCREDIBLE stats for the Presidential…but I’ve seen some not quite so high also. So I’m not exactly sure what they look for overall.

@R124687 you seem to know alot about the school/scholarships… what are some of the stats you’ve seen getting presidential or DEANs?? i have a 33 act (34 power), ~90 GPA (weak point, but extremely-competitive-entrance-examination-elite-high-school) a ton of ECs, over 500 hours of community service, and i think creative essays+supplements.
honestly do you think i have a shot at these great scholarships?
personally: i don’t. i’m not even sure if i’ll get in. but i’ve heard mixed things from people and wondered your input. thanks! :)

Currently, almost all of the scholarships offered by NYU are need-based. Without need, there are very few merit scholarships offered. If you have any need at all, then you might get a scholarship…but if your EFC is above the cost of NYU, then you are only eligible for very few true merit aid scholarships. Some are the ones listed already (they are for a very exclusive few) plus some talent merit scholarships for art/ theatre / music from Steinhardt and Tisch.

@uskoolfish you are talking about presidential/DEANs/etc. when you say merit based, correct? those are not based upon need, are they?

whats the difference between a DEAN’s scholarship and a presidential one?

what kind of stats do you have to get a women in science scholarship? I’m majoring in psych and nyu is one of my top choices

jalinovi,

Just want to follow up on comment of yours. I have to give NYU credit for putting the whole package together in the case of DS’s application to NYU and successful outcome with MLK Scholar Award. While I mentioned DS had written “tailor made” responses to the short answers, the answers were not manufactured. They came out of his PASSION and AUTHENTIC commitment to service and social justice. That is why the program shot up in our estimation. DS wrote what could be construed as a controversial essay (perhaps not acceptable to the status quo authorities) but it reflected his record of experiences and philosophy of life as well as his true commitments. I (we) give a lot of credit to NYU for appreciating DS’s honesty and ability to put the entire package together to know who DS is as a person and a candidate (not merely putting forward the right image just to get into top colleges).

There is so much of putting forth the right image perhaps at the expense of who you really are as a person. I have to once again compliment my son in being truthful to who he is even if that might not be a turn on for some schools.

usk, Regarding the need-based merit scholarships. In DS’s case, the EFC was the top #: $99,999 based on FAFSA, but DS got the MLK Scholarship anyway. We did apply for financial aid and the #s were skewed negatively for us due to our mistake of pulling out all home equity line to invest in market (really a very unfavorable thing in terms of FA). Our family income had actually gone down drastically (to under $60 K/ annually), hence, our motivation to invest the money in stock market (for better or worse, influenced also by our awareness of need for extra $ to pay for very expensive college costs).
