Raceme117: Do NOT feel bad. The admissions committees had their reasoning.

So true. You really can succeed anywhere with the right work ethic. Seriously Raceme117, everybody will get over it and do fine. I am sure that if they are even considering Davidson they have a good work ethic and will be accepted into some other great school. Davidson has been admitting great students for years and knows exactly what they are looking for, and it probably has little to do with grades because everybody has the same ones. You are part of a handpicked class and will have so much fun as part of that.

seriously raceme, don’t feel bad. i’m happy for you and i’m sure you deserve it!

i was waitlisted last night, but i just got into duke so i won’t be staying on the waitlist. good luck to everyone else!

I think the objective for Davidson is finding people they know will want to attend and pay the tuition. My scores are some of the lowest on this thread and my resume is much shorter. But I attended every single Davidson event in my area and frequently communicated with my regional adcom. I did everything she told me to do. When she told me I should take the subject tests, I did even though my Latin score is dismal. When she said I should make up for a low math SAT by challenging myself with my course load, I took AP Stat. She knew it was the best school I was applying to and that my parents would be willing to pay for it cause dad is an alum.

Although Davidson looks amazing, and congrats to all accepted and able to attend!

Has anyone heard about merit aid?

sounds like many have heard at least something. i haven’t :(

Waitlisted as well. It seems like a quite common outcome for many in this thread. Tres Bizzare.

I spoke with my regional adcom yesterday and she said, “In all honesty a very large majority of the scholarship finalists have already been notified. We had an incredibly difficult pool of students this year and making the choices was nearly impossible.” So I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it looks like, if you haven’t heard, you aren’t getting anything (which stinks hardcore).

There was a Belk finalist visiting in my English class today.

I will probably end up at my state flagship school. Congrats to everyone who got in!!

I mentioned this on W&L’s board, which had, like ya’ll on this board, alot of wait listed people who were very well qualified for admission, and even arguably so for the merit scholarships, (Welk for Davidson, Johnson for W&L) One possible explanation is that they wanted to see ya’ll apply to the merit scholarships, not doing so would probably register as a sign of not having interest…these type of schools can be very quirky

more and more im getting the feeling that interest is key for very selective, and even just selective, schools. for example, i’d be in the running for a huge scholarship from tulane, but was waitlisted. tons of others were too, the common factor: we didn’t show much, if any, interest. and it seems like this is happening at a lot of very, but not uber, selective schools.

On the same note, they want to protect their yield rate. That’s possibly all there is to it.

I probably could have created a new thread for this, but this might be more effecient. Anyways, as those of you who have seen my previous post in this thread know, I was waitlisted this year. Davidson is my top choice so I’m trying my best to get off the waitlist.

I sent an email to my regional admissons counselor on March 31st, just saying I was still interested in Davidson and asking if there was anything specific I could do besides sending in 3rd quarter grades. However, she was not responded yet. Should I send a follow-up email? Or just not worry about that and attempt to contact Davidson’s main admissions office?

Also, while they say they only want academic information, should I send them a letter reiterating the reasons I want to attend?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Follow up email or letter is good. Email to your regional officer is better because it will take less time to be processed.

I was initially waitlisted at Davidson but I just got a call asking me “What my current situation is?” in terms of college. I have already enrolled at Emory University which gave me a full scholarship (need-based). I think they want to take me off the waitlist. To be honest, I was really surprised that I was waitlisted in the first place given my GPA(4.0 UW/4.2 W) and hooks (Bulgarian immigrant, low income, excel in writing, school awards in English/History, etc.). Once I communicated the fact that I have enrolled at Emory to the lady who called, she told me to write down her number and then “think about it” and call her back. Although I have no intention of enrolling, I really want to see if I will get taken off the waitlist. Is this considered a very bad decision on my part and inconsideration to those who desperately want to get in off the waitlist?

to be frank, probably, yeah

Well, thanks for the honest response. The business is already done, however, so I can’t change anything now. I’m sincerely sorry to those who will possibly be deprived of a spot due to my selfishness. On a more hopeful note, however, waitlists are rolling so, therefore, if I decline my offer of admission should I get in, someone else will get offered admission off the waitlist instead. I actually think this kind of overrides my selfishness. Anyways, I apologize.

While an anonymous apology on an anonymous forum might make YOU feel better, why don’t you just call the woman who asked you to “think about it” and tell her you are sticking with your current plan, and are not interested in being further considered? Someone surely wants a spot at Davidson, and you gain nothing by sitting by, waiting to see if you get it. It would take you 2 minutes to make this simple gesture, and it would mean a lot to someone. I’m sorry, I have no stake in this at all, but I read the Davidson forum sometimes, and just can’t resist urging you to play nice.
