*Official Fall 2013 UC Transfer CHANCE thread*

Applied: UCB, UCSD, UCI, UCSB
California resident
Major: Mechanical Engineering
GPA: 3.7
IGETC: Completed
Pre-reqs: missing Linear Algebra and last semester of Physics :frowning:
Personal Statements: 1 good 1 meh
ECs: none really. started working as a cashier in a hardware store when in high school until I moved after my first semester of college.

@primes: pretty sure you got into all those schools
@feliciaaj: I would say you have an extremely good chance at getting into both schools

@iDizzle so applicants who have a lower GPA but never really messed up in their academics would look least favorable to someone like primes?
not to take anything away from primes. good job for that 4.0!
but im just curious

@ futurehighlander: Not necessarily. It’s not about messing up. It’s about having to go that extra mile to obtain what you’ve obtained. It’s still hard to say, who REALLY knows what the UC’s want right? LOL

Okay I’m not an expert when it comes to applying for college. Really. So my questions are truly questions, even if they seems dumb. @primes says he has a 4.0 GPA in both his major and General. But then he says that a few years ago he got tons of F’s and W’s. So how can he have a 4.0 GPA? Don’t you have to include those F’s in the GPA? I am asking because I want someone to chance me for getting a UCSD Regents Scholarship offer. I have a 4.0 GPA for everything I’ve done in the last 3 years. However, when I was 16 – which was thirty two years ago – I got a C and a B on something and bottom line it is bringing my perfect GPA down to 3.82. When considering if I am in the top 1 or 1.5% for Regents scholarship, are they going to go “She has a 3.82” or “She has a 4.0”? Here are my stats in specific:

I applied to UCSD for French Literature and UCLA for French language.
I’m 48 years old and work 60 hours per week.
GPA: 3.82 (including one bad semester 32 years ago)
Major GPA: 4.0 (my GPA for all classes in the last three years)
All pre-requ’s for major completed.
IGETC: yes
Personal Essays: consensus is pretty damn good/sorta poetic

Can anyone either answer the question about @primes and my GPA, or chance me for the Regents, or both?

Thanks! I am on pins and needles and that Regents would mean I don’t have to work as much (I have financial need as well).

@eyespy because of academic renewal on the F’s and D’s perhaps. you can retake classes that you got a D or F in and the new grade (considering its a C or above) will override the D or F

if you get a C or B
then there is nothing you can do. you are stuck with it.
im not an expert either, but this is what i understand lol

Yup that’s right. I have a couple AR’s

Oh, I see. That makes sense. Okay, does anyone want to try to chance me for a Regents Scholarship at UCSD? Kind of an obscure chance request, and possibly off topic, but I’d love to hear some opinions/data/anecdotes

@ eyespy: Yes they are right, and that is exactly what I did as well. I had D’s and F’s and all that jazz. I went back to school when I was 21(in 09) and had an existing 1.5gpa from 06-07. I did academic renewal for most of my F and D grades. I also “petitioned” to replace F and D grades with grades from retaken classes.

I think you have a good chance at all of that. There are also special scholarships for returning students over the age of 25. Unfortunately, I was only 24 at the time of transfer so I wasn’t eligible to apply for that. I was also working at the time too(50+ hours a week). It looks like the UCs feel that students who have had “hardships” deserve a shot as much as 4.0 students do. You’re in a good place!

Thank you iDizzle!

Someone please chance me!! I’m going all OCD on my chances for transfer to UCB, talking to other Mech. Engineers in my CC while covertly comparing my stats to theirs. I applied to other UC’s as well, but UCB is by far my top choice.

Major: Mechanical Engineering
Level: Junior Transfer
Cumulative GPA: 3.88 (Got a B in Calc. 2, only B for the major)
Academic renewal for classes I took right out of high school — could not complete classes after 2 weeks, forced to work full time, I was dumb for not dropping them.
TAU Submission: 18 units last semester - Chem 1A, Physics 4B, Calc 3, Engineering Graphics, A in every class! Does this help significantly?

IGETC: Completed
Pre-requisite completion: All pre-reqs completed and have the only 2 “recommend” courses for the major that are offered by my school, and any nearby.

Extracurriculars/Personal Qualities: TA for Physics at my CC for the past 3 semesters. Experience as mechanic working on construction tools/equipment before CC. Community service in Fiji and locally with a group representing displaced people from Nepal. Wrote about how I was determined and don’t back down from a challenge. Learned from my mistakes in the past (returning student) Also tried to convey how passionate I was about the major, I’ve always taken a strong interest in mechanical devices and love to design stuff.

Knowing my chance is half the battle! Thank you!!!

@Avatar assuming you wrote a good essay, I think you’re golden. Good luck pal.

can anyone chance me please? :S super nervous!

Applying from: CCC

Applying to (in ranking order):
UCR
CPP
UCSB
UCSC
UCD

Major: History/Administrative Studies (UCR) / History (for all other UCs & CPP)
Alternate Major (UCR): History

GPA: 3.19 (UC GPA after Fall 2012)
3.24 (UC GPA after Winter 2013) I reported my winter session grade by the January 31st TAU deadline. (if that makes any difference)

ECs: marching band, tennis team, french club. i was also section leader for my section in band and 1st chair

Work: part time at a movie theatre (~12 hrs/week)

additional comments: i mentioned in the additional comments section about me being admitted to the hospital for a couple of weeks thus leading to low grades (a couple of C’s) and withdrawals during the 2011-2012 school year.

IGETC will be completed.
already have 6 out of 8 pre reqs completed, and finishing the last two this current spring semester

Thanks emprex, that’s what I’m hoping, but it’s hard not to be pessimistic as a defense mechanism!

@avatar: You’ll be fine. i was in the same position as you.

Thanks iDizzle. My chance should be improved even more now because I’m going to be interning with a research group at UC Berkeley this summer, sponsored by the Department of Energy! Just did another Transfer Academic Update even though it’s after the deadline.

Oh and my IGETC isn’t completed, I was mistaken. But they don’t recommend it for engineering anyway, and I changed my application to reflect that.

@iDizzle: Awesome!!Thank you so much for replying to me and congratulations to you for getting into UCLA!!! Sounds amazing!

2012 UCSD transfer average gpa was 3.5
2012 UCI transfer average gpa was 3.43
My gpa is 3.34, majoring in econ. do you guys think that I have a chance at those schools?

@ Caracr: Thanks! So you are applying to UCLA for Comm? That’s awesome! I was originally a Comm major but decided not to waste my application and apply as an anthro major since Comm is one of the most impacted majors here and I had only a 3.5 gpa. Last year the average transfer gpa was a 3.94 for that major. I met a few comm studies transfers here though. I think you should have a great chance. The fact that LA and Cal take a holistic approach to your application they will know a lot more about you as a person than just looking at grades alone. I hope you get it, good luck!

@zooloo: econ is one of the most impacted majors at all the UC’s. I’m highly doubtful that a 3.34 will get you into UCSD for econ. The TAG requirement is a 3.5. I had TAG last year for UCSD for communications and got waitlisted. UCI’s standards are a bit lower but econ applicants for UCI still have significantly higher gpa’s. Did you apply to UCR or any other campuses?

Yes. I applied to UCR as my backup. Initially I applied to 4 UC schools and later I added one. (UCI).
I thought Econ is impacted only at UCLA and UCB.
How come UCSD and UCI don’t state that Econ is impacted? They only say biological sciences and engineering majors are impacted.
Anyway, hope to get in somewhere except UCR. My alternate major choice is political science.
is sociology impacted at UCSD and UCI?

^ Econ @ UCSD is absolutely heavily impacted. But if you talk about UCD, UCI, they may be popular, but not impacted. not sure about UCSB.

did you get any tags on these schools?
