my current GPA is 3.4(going to maintain/raise it to around 3.5) by end of fall. I want to transfer as Computer Science major to the following schools. Please let me know what are my chances to get in. I have all pre-req and Igetc finished. Thanks
UCSD
UCLA
UCD
UCSC
UCSI
UCSB

Seeing all of these people with perfect GPAs and crazy extra-curriculars scares me quite a bit -_- why is this thread so dead all of a sudden??

Yeah, where has everyone gone? We should post out stats to just have a better picture what kind of competition we are facing)) Like where are all the linguistics major applicants?) Here are my stats:

CCC(CCSF) Transfer 2013 to UCSD, UCLA, UCB, UCD

Attended medical university in Eastern Europe for 2.5 years, then in 2011 fled the country due to political turmoil, got political asylum in USA. I don’t really want to go back into medicine, and so started the whole process of higher education anew.

Intended Major: Linguistics(for UCSD, UCD, UCB), Computational Linguistics(for UCLA)

CC GPA: 3.78(always wondered, do PE classes, like dance, count? Got a “B” in dance; if they count that, then 3.76). Slightly more than 60 CC units

Prerequisites:none listed for my major; I’m taking Calculus, CS classes(I’m interested in computational linguistics), philosophy; study German in Goethe Institute in SF; native language - Russian

IGETC: Yep

EC: Well before I got political asylum I had to pay international tuition fees, and so had to work 40hrs/week to make it with all the bills( I live alone, my family is in Eastern Europe) - waitress, baby sitter; since I got my legal status - tutored ESL to immigrants, Calculus tutor at CCSF
I tried to join some clubs, but honestly, they are all kind of boring and a waste of time, my work was a priority.

Awards:
won a couple of languages competitions in my country(not sure UC cares though);
Dean’s List(kind of lame, too

Other: first-generation student

I’m kind of worried about the fact that I used to attend medical university, I know UC’S are strict on excess units policy. I have around 60 - 70 units from medical school, but since they’re all veeeery irrelevant to my intended major of study I took all necessary courses in CC.
I’m also baffled by the absence of prerequisites for my major on assist.org. I ended up concentrating on IGETC and math/cs classes( I also took Fin Acc course, but until this day have no idea why I did this I got “A” anyway, but it’s really irrelevant to linguistics lol). German classes were kind of weak at my cc, and so I study German in an outside institution.

I really would love to make it to Berkeley, I started my immigrant life here in the Bay Area and leaving this place would be sad But I know the school is very competitive and my credentials are kind of mediocre, so UCSD would be great too

I’d bet you’d get into all of them UCB is the only iffy one

CCC Transfer to UCB, UCLA, UCI, and UCSB

Major: English
Overall GPA: 3.8
UC GPA: 3.77 (expected to be higher by the end of this semester)
Major GPA: 4.0

Submitted TAG for UCI (English)
TAP Certified for UCLA
SPMP (Starting Point Mentor Program) with UCB
IGETC completed
Only 2 prerequisites completed (English 45A and part of 45C. I know this is a huge disadvantage. My CC offers a limited number of literature courses; I’ve had to go to other CCs for my English prerequisites. Currently I’m trying my best to find other prereqs at different CCs to take in the Spring of 2013. I have, however, consistently taken other non-prerequisite literature courses offered at my CC.)

Honors Transfer Program
Phi Theta Kappa member
Dean’s List (since Spring of 2011)
English Supplemental Instructor (paid position)
English Peer Tutor
Part-time job as a cashier for 2 years
Part-time job as a paid intern at a Dentist Office (current)
Piano for 15+ years

CCC Transfer to UCI or UCSD
All of IGETC is done
Completed TAG for UCI
Major: Film
Minor: Digital Arts
CCC gpa: 3.5
UC gpa: 3.1
I went to UCSC for my freshman year, but decided I wanted to transfer to a school in socal (for my major) so I went to a CCC for my second year.
I applied to UCSD last year and was waitlisted, but didn’t get accepted from that list. I’m only applying this year to UCSD because my sister (twin) got into UCSD last year and is going there now. Other than that, I’m just hoping for UCI.

Applying to:

Hoping to transfer to UCI
College: California Community College
Major: Informatics
GPA: Currently 3.46. Hoping to bring it up to 3.5-3.6
TAG: No
Prerequisites: 2/4. UCI added 3 more prereqs this year, thats why I am suddenly behind.
IGETC: No
EC: Honors credit for one semester
Work: 2 years since graduating high school

@caldud: Should be in for all, but UCR and UCD seem solid. I’d caution on UCI, only because they seem to have a semi-bipolar way of accepting people. Your extracurriculars are excellent, though your GPA could be higher.

@scienceguy1: UCSB and SLO see to be good shots for you, seeing as you have finished a lot of pre-reqs. I’d chance the rest of your schools from most likely to least: UCI, UCSD, an UCB). Not sure about what kind of unit count you have there, because that’s on the higher end of the transfer spectrum. Are you pre-med by any chance?

@MrHerbert: You look good for all UC schools, though UCB’s Haas is a crapshoot. I haven’t had direct experience with your question, but I’m sure that you can apply Economics as an alternate major. In UCB at least, you aren’t admitted to the Economics major until a semester into it (you’re accepted to the College of Letters & Sciences first).

@fuzzyducky22: Not sure about you. I would say 50-50. Failing the summer courses was bad, but I’m not certain if biological sciences is impacted at UCD. If it is impacted, your chance would be slightly less. However, remember that UC-UC transfers are very rare. But hey, there’s always a chance right?

@lilrock23: Impressive stats, I’d guess accepted at all schools. The fact you have all pre-reqs done, not to mention your high GPA and tough major, make your application a strong one to begin with. Your extracurriculars do nothing but help you.

@nerissa924: You look good for UCB, and I’d chance you at 90% accepted. Accepted for all other UC’s. Cornell and BU unsure, since I’m not familiar with their acceptance rates. Your extracurriculars are excellent. TAP is good, and completing all the pre-reqs for something like MCB is amazing. Your GPA is your only weak point, but UCB is known to be more lenient when looking at hard science’s GPAs and completed pre-reqs.

@mmoustache: Your statistics are decent, and I’d guess you’re in for UCSD, UCSB, UCR, UCI. UCB will depend if you apply to Haas or not, but for economics, you would most likely be rejected (that C in Calculus definitely comes back to haunt you). I feel that to strengthen your application, you should become involved with student government/organizations and find a finance/business-related internship/job. Your essays and personal situation/ethnicity will also play the determing factor for acceptance at UCB (and most likely Cornell, USC and NYU).

@jamesmjavier: You look good for all schools you’re applying to. Your GPA and volunteer hours could be higher, but you do have your other extracurriculars to compensate for that. Additionally, you being Hispanic doesn’t hurt, haha. ;D

@pandahx: I feel you are good for all UC’s just based on your extracurriculars. However, your lack of finishing pre-reqs does hurt, since computer science is an impacted major at many (if not all) of the schools you applied to. Have you finished at least some of the physics classes needed? That would be better than not having any physics classes completed at all.

@Megami: In for UCB, UCLA, and UCSB. Your non-traditional student status explains your lack of extracurriculars, yet you do have on-campus involvement and a great GPA, which IMO is a plus. I would just focus on writing a stellar essay; you should be okay.

@XianForce: In for UCI and UCD, shaky for UCB. Lack of recommended courses and solid extracurriculars do hurt you, along with the fact that computer science is an impacted major. Unfortunately, high school stats don’t mean a damn thing (I feel your pain, I was a one-and-a-half-year transfer and didn’t have enough time to establish myself around my CCC).

@backdelias: You look good for all schools except UCB (especially since you have not finished the Calculus pre-req). I’d recommend to become involved on your campus, because that’s always a big help in applications. For UCB though, it’s always worth applying, cause you never know!

So, I worked pretty hard in highschool passing with an ap scholar with honors award (i think it was averaging a 3 in 5 or more ap tests? for me it was US history 4, psych 5, bio 4, US Gov and Politics 3, Micro Econ 4, spanish language 2 (misread an essay question unfortunately haha), physics 2)
This luckily gave me lots and lots of credit at a CC (btw i just sent the score request thing in the mail to be sent to my cc but do you know how long it usually takes to get there?) I took some classes in the summer and during highschool so I officially became a student with the following (i’m also hispanic)
JA 1 (C)
JA 2 (F being retaken this semester and getting an A)
WR1 (C)
Mus 28 (A)

but i have 3 new classes and one retake that I am getting A’s in all of them now so I will have 7 classes total

I will have all my IGETC done by the end of next semester as well as 60 units total with the units from ap credits.
My question is because I am doing this only in one year when I apply there will only be 7 classes on the transcript meaning two C’s will weigh much heavier on my GPA
I am an instate CA Community College student
I will have an Associates in Psych by the time the spring semester is over too if that means anything.
I’ll only have a 3.45 GPA
I won’t have any extra curriculars (should I put the school stuff and what i had when i applied as a freshman? if so then I’ll be putting things like a summe criminal justice academy eagle scout 2 years of sports and other things)
What should I do here?
Ill be applying to quite a few UC’s with a major in Criminology but my 1st pick is UCI
what are my chances? do you have any suggestions? (when they look at my transcript and see that there are only 7 classes making up my gpa will they think “alright it isn’t as bad as we thought”
Any help is appreciated

Computer Science
3.15 GPA
Officer positions in Russian, Computer Science, and Engineering Clubs
Participated in several programming competitions

Will finish all pre-reqs in the Spring
Applying to UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, Cal Poly SLO, CSU Long Beach, San Diego State

Oh man. Reading your guy’s stats I feel like an idiot for asking but you gotta right?

SAT scores: W-510 M-490 CR-500
GPA: 3.60
It doesn’t look like I can complete the IGETC just by 1 or 2 classes…
The major I was hoping for was film studies or film and TV or film/TV writing
I’ve only taken two classes for my major [that’s because they only offer two classes for my major at the CC I’m at]
My parents went to college in a different country

My older sister is at Cal Berkeley right now for psychology.

Does any of this help/hurt? Is there anything I could do to up my chances? Please be honest, should I just keep at it in community college? Should I even try to apply?

Thanks

CHANCE ME!

CCC Student hoping to get into Haas! May consider applying for Econ instead if my chances seem better for that.

GPA: 3.93

Prereqs: Intro to business completed, business statistics completed, macroecon in progress, applied calc 1 in progress, microecon planned, applied calc 2 planned.
Almost all breadth reqs are complete, a few are in progress and 1 is planned.

Work Exp: Here and there I help my mom with her ebay business, I basically buy items and re-sell them for profit. I was also a hostess at a restaurant for 1.5 years working 15 hours a week, and have been working at the college bookstore for 20 hours a week. For one semester those two jobs were overlapping, so I didn’t have time for ECs.

ECs: Secretary of an on-campus business club. I was previously treasurer for a club I participated with in high school, but I stayed active through my first semester in college.

Volunteer work: DSS note-taker for one semester. Tutoring a girl for econ. A few community service days.

Awards: Nothing really. I got an informal promotion (hostess to take-out) at my previous job and got another informal promotion to training new employees at the other job, does that really count though?

Additional: I applied for UCSD TAG

Also let me know if I’d have a better chance applying for Haas or for econ. My interests really lie in business, but I know how competitive Haas is.
