<p>Hey guys I’m new to college confidential but not new to reading threads like these, I hope some of you guys can chance me based off this info.</p>
<p>Major:business economics(ucla),economics (Ucb), economics(ucsb), global economics(ucsc)</p>
<p>GPA: 3.9
Major gpa:4.0</p>
<p>Prerequisites: all igetc completed, all major prep completed.</p>
<p>Extra curriculars:
-3 semesters in Alpha Gamma Sigma(community service and transcript recognition)
-deans list and presidents list (both on transcript I believe?)
-brown belt in jujitsu, been doing it for 4 years now
-worked part time at a movie theater for over a year and a half(about 15-20 hours a week)
won a $1000 scholarship for an economics essay I wrote
attended a week long seminar with IHS on Econ/government</p>

<p>So, I worked pretty hard in highschool passing with an ap scholar with honors award (i think it was averaging a 3 in 5 or more ap tests? for me it was US history 4, psych 5, bio 4, US Gov and Politics 3, Micro Econ 4, spanish language 2 (misread an essay question unfortunately haha), physics 2)
This luckily gave me lots and lots of credit at a CC (btw i just sent the score request thing in the mail to be sent to my cc but do you know how long it usually takes to get there?) I took some classes in the summer and during highschool so I officially became a student with the following (i’m also hispanic)

JA 2 (F being retaken this semester and getting an A)

<p>but i have 3 new classes and one retake that I am getting A’s in all of them now so I will have 7 classes total</p>
<p>I will have all my IGETC done by the end of next semester as well as 60 units total with the units from ap credits.
My question is because I am doing this only in one year when I apply there will only be 7 classes on the transcript meaning two C’s will weigh much heavier on my GPA
I am an instate CA Community College student
I will have an Associates in Psych by the time the spring semester is over too if that means anything.
I’ll only have a 3.45 GPA
I won’t have any extra curriculars obviously because I havent even been in college a semester (should I put what i had when i applied as a freshman? if so then I’ll be putting things like a summer criminal justice academy eagle scout 2 years of sports and other things)
What should I do here?
Ill be applying to quite a few UC’s with a major in Criminology but my 1st pick is UCI
what are my chances? do you have any suggestions? (when they look at my transcript and see that there are only 7 classes making up my gpa will they think “alright it isn’t as bad as we thought”

<p>@berkeleyio I can’t think of a reason why UCLA, Berkeley and Davis would not accept you. Your major is not impacted and you’re WAY above the average gpa. You have stellar stats and EC’s. Just write an awesome essay and you’re in!</p>
<p>@econlife Your GPA is actually a little below average for UCLA – I can only assume it’s higher for Berkeley. Economics is impacted everywhere, so a lot of qualified applicants get denied. It’s honestly a 50/50 for Berkeley and UCLA. The TAP will help out. I like that you won a scholarship on an essay you wrote for economics. That could definitely help. You’re definitely in at UCSC and UCSB. Just one question: will have the transferable math course completed this Fall. If you don’t, your chances at UCSB will be extremely reduced.</p>
<p>@rick you should make an appointment with a counselor at your school. You already have a thread going on about this. The reason a lot of people aren’t giving you advice is because you have a interesting situation going on that most people have no experience in. Talk to a counselor; only they can give you qualified answers. Seriously, go talk to a counselor, they’re there for a reason.</p>
<p>I have Calc 1 done already. Calc 2 is being completed in the spring of this year. Btw my gpa is 3.9 as of spring of last year. Including this fall it should be 3.93 if that helps.</p>
<p>Was wondering if I could get an opinion on whether or not to add a congressional nomination on to my honors/ awards for the UC app? It was for a service academy I did not end up wanting to go to, but I dont know if i should or not. Thanks for the opinions.</p>
<p>HELP! This is my third year at SMC. Currently I have 2.9 gpa transferable UC units </p>
<p>I want to transfer to UCLA for Gender Studies. Do you think that it will be possible for me to be accepted? I know the UCLA school of Letters and Science needs at at 3.2 … But on the SMC site it says to transfer from SMC to UCLA you only need a 2.4.</p>

<p>Good luck to all 2013 hopefuls! I had to do it all last year and I know that it is an exciting but nerve racking time for all of you. I haven’t been on this forum since admissions came out in April but I hope I may be able to give some advice for next years transfers. My little sister is also applying this Fall for 2013 transfer. <p>quick word of advice since I have class soon. Don’t worry too much about your major prereqs(although to have them is better) but work on your GE/IGETC first. Last year there were many applicants with high GPAs(3.6-3.9) that got denied because they had their Math or English in-progress during that last Spring semester before transfer. I also got accepted into UCSB with only 1/4 of my prereqs done and the one prereq I completed was actually by coincidence(stats).</p>
<p><em>edit</em> I also have a younger brother who transferred to UCLA in 2011 with TAP. I’m also an older transfer student who had to deal with AR(academic renewal) and was out of school for about 2 years before returning. So my transfer process was a bit more “untraditional” than most transfers so I feel that I can cover more bases if anyone has questions.</p>

<p>@ricky Yes, that is right. I talked to UCSB representative during our college fair at my local CC, and he said that if you don’t have the transferable math and the last English course done by this Fall, your chances are pretty much zero, even if your major is not selective. It’s because they get so many applications.</p>
<p>@ Rickyseg: Yeah you should have your English and Math done ASAP. I had mine done within the first year and being out of school for 2 years I had a lot of remedial English and Math to take. If what Mermaker said above is true than you may be in a bad place. But last year, people who had competitive (3.8ish) GPAs but had Math or English IP(in progress) during the Spring semester right before transfer did not get accepted to SB or Davis let alone UCLA or Cal. </p>
<p>I guess there reasoning is like “If this person could take all their prereqs, why couldn’t they take the most basic English and Math requirement?” Also it’s because they don’t know if you will pass the course when its the last semester before transfer. I assume its going to be increasingly more competitive this year as it has increased every single year, especially with the the budget cuts to the CSU system this year more applicants are going to be driven to the UC system.</p>
<p>In 2011 when my brother transferred, the TAG requirement for UCSD was only a 3.0. When I transferred in 2012, the requirement was a 3.5. hopefully it goes unchanged this year or worse, removed all together.</p>
<p>@ kristimichelle: I think the 2.4 GPA is probably the bare minimum for them not to throw out your application. But they will willingly accept someone more qualified and with that GPA you chances are near none. It’s just way too competitive now. It was more competitive last year than 2011, and this years going to be more competitive than 2012. </p>
<p>If it helps, during orientation here at UCLA one of the application reviewers gave a presentation saying that UCLA is the most applied to school and gave us some insight on how the application process works and how we were admitted out of thousands. They read hundreds of apps everyday, and they are generally all the same. If the reader sees something that stands out like if you’re essay was good, showed struggle, or you showed consistent improvement in grades than the reader will pull the application aside. They then take the application to be read by two other reviewers, and if they both say yes then you are in.</p>
<p>My GPA was only a 3.49(Anthropology). I graduated high school in 2005 with a 1.5 GPA. Went to CC for 2 years, got D’s and F’s and dropped out with roughly a 1.5 GPA. I came back to school in 2009, got academic renewal for the old grades from 06-07 and got A’s and B’s the second time around. I guess my improvement in grades and the fact that I was working full-time for 4 years trying to help out my family while taking night classes(mentioned in my essays) was what made me stand out from the bunch?</p>
<p>@iDizzle how do you like the Anthropology department at UCLA? I’m also doing anthro but with and emphasize on Bio anthro. I tagged UCSC. From what I hear, it’s not very competitive. Do you know anything about the other UC anthro departments?</p>
<p>@ Mermaker: The anthro dept is awesome! I’m taking paleopathology this quarter and its really interesting. Anthro at UCLA is one of the less impacted majors but still competitive none the less. I’m actually meeting up with my group for another anthro class this weekend to go out and do ethnographic research. The paper is due at the end of the quarter. lol. </p>
<p>Oh, and that culture & comm class on the assist.org website that isn’t offered at any of the community colleges…don’t worry about it. They don’t expect you to have taken it. They reserve that course for your first quarter at orientation.</p>
<p>I don’t know much about the anthro dept at other schools. I think Berkeley is supposed to have a great anthro dept but based on what other anthro majors are telling me, they have a small dept.(probably a bit biased though).</p>
<p>I would also skip UCI for anthro. UCI requires calculus and computer science for anthro…god knows why. LOL. I took the CS classes but didn’t have time to take calc. I got waitlisted by UCI at first, but ultimately got accepted.</p>
<p>I’m kind of special then, Everyone else applying has had three semester to take both writing and 1 math but I have been in college for 1 (in progress) semester, I have 1 writing done and this semester im doing Math 10 so the only thing of that I’m missing is the wr2,
Also when they get my application I will have a 3.307
Does my special circumstance change anything?
Also I had my AP scores sent to my CC and UCI they are part of my 60 units so is that in my college transcript and I don’t need to worry about it because it will just come up as doing the class that relates to it at this college? or do I need to put ap tests I have taken?
Keep in mind they will only have 7 classes to look at calculating my gpa, and the only two that aren’t A’s are Japanese 1 and writing 1 and they were done in the fall of senior year and the summer before college respectively so it’s not like i was an experienced student you know what I mean?
Oh, and I have a disability (that I only just not got put into papers with my school before I just dealt with it), and I was an Eagle Scout and did a criminal justice academy.</p>
