UC Berkeley Fall 2011 Chance thread

@Pyoro - I would say UCB will be a bit of a reach for you. Although I’m sure they look more heavily upon major GPA, there seems to be a lot of B’s/C’s that brought you down to a 3.53 which will not be attractive. Your major is not capped in L&S so that shows that it’s not too competitive to get in for admission.

@WindedBison - For UCBerkeley, realize that other people may have a lot of prereqs completed, but you being at a solid 4.0 will make your application look very great. I say you’re in, but once again, it depends on how many prereqs the application pool has completed. A 4.0 definitely tells them that you’re prepared for your major. I hope with the classes you took, a lot of them are relevant to philosophy.

@Sidra - Without the CSU catch, I’d say you’re in. Your EC’s and GPA is amazing. With the catch, MAKE SURE you explain it SOMEWHERE in that application and let them know everything about your circumstances at that moment of time. Clearly you show that you are capable of succeeding without that circumstance in your way so if they are willing to accept it, they will not turn you down over that circumstance because those grades do not accurately reflect how motivated and intelligent you are.

@rattlehead - I would estimate you’re at a 75% chance. It’s hard to say because EECS is a VERY tough major to be admitted to. But you’re doing well and I would say expect an acceptance letter! I feel like you are very motivated and will succeed at Cal!

@xcaliberse yes, 2 B’s 2 C’s exact, out of the 45 units. Thanks for chancing me!

Thanks xcaliberse. The suspense is killing me, hahaha. One side of my brain tells me I have a really good shot and the other side says no chance in hell. But at this point the best thing I can do is focus on the Spring semester and keep my grades up.

I read your original post in this thread, and it seems to me like you’re in, no questions asked. With a 4.0 GPA and extracurriculars that relate to your major, I don’t see how they can turn you down. Have you competed most or all of your pre-reqs?

After this sem, it might drop to 3.7 - 3.9 depending on my grades =/. I’ve completed all the available prereqs. the CS 61 series is not offered so I took 4 programming courses that are UC transferrable but not articulated to the 61 series.

Chance Me!

Major: Applied Mathematics
GPA: 3.47 (it’s all A’s and B’s though!)
Major GPA: 3.58
EC’s: Summer Physics Internship at UCR, Hospital Intern, Math tutor, on the board for a school club
PS: 7/10
No IGETC

I will finish the last math class my school offers in the Spring. The only Math classes I got B’s in were Calc 2&3 but precal, calc 1, and linear algebra were A’s. should have 68 units after the spring. Some of the worse B’s I got were in big classes like French 1(5 units) and English 1A and Chem 1A(5 units) and Mechanics. Nothing below a B though.

I have a pretty equal balance between A’s and B’s. too many B’s if you ask me. I’m actually considering staying a third year at CC because I know I can raise that up to at least a 3.7 but we’ll see how this goes…

what do you think?

Major: Civil Engineering
GPA: 3.76
Major GPA: 3.65 (breakdown below)
TAP: No
EC’s: none
PS: 8/10
No IGETC

Currently at CCC

Hi, I was homeschooled all the way to 12th grade, so I never took any chemistry, or a math class more advanced that intermediate algebra.

Here is a list of the transferrable classes Ive taken at the CCC, I did not include non transferrables.

Chem 1A: B (first ever chemistry class Ive taken)
Chem 1B: A
Calculus1: A
Calculus2: A
Physics 1A: A (first ever physics course)
CIS 26: B (got into a car accident on my way to a midterm)
English 1A: A
English 1B: B (professor never returned any exams and lost everyone’s paper work all the time)

I still have 3 semesters to go, which will end up giving me a total of 8 semesters at a CCC… I need 8 semesters because I needed 3 math prerequisites before I could take Calc 1.

I know its a long shot for Berkeley’s Civil Engineering, but is there a chance in hell that I’d get accepted? If not, what other Uni’s would be an option?

Help would be appreciated.

Major: Anthropology
GPA: 3.87 but should be 3.91 when rest of grades roll in for the semester.
TAP: Nope, but TAG for UCRiverside
EC: Anthropology Club, intense involvement in theatre(Thespian, lots of hours, lots of awards, and leadership positions), Interact Club in high school(lots of community service), working part time
IGETC: Complete by Spring
PS: Pretty darn good. Decent at least.
Applying from: CCC
Other: Associate of Arts in Anthropology after this semester. One B and one A- are what are dropping my gpa a bit.

I’m curious. Chance me, please.

@walleats - I would say your chances are approximately like a cointoss because I would assume that UC Berkeley looks highly on the Major GPA. Seeing that you had quite a few B’s in your major classes, that may not look too appealing, but your EC’s/Internships are amazing. The physics and the math ECs are both related to your major, so it looks good. How many units will you have completed by Fall?

@ConstableZiM - Civil Engineering is tough to be admitted to for UC Berkeley. I would say for your situation, it may be a bit of a reach. I don’t think English qualifies as a major prereq, but rather an admission prereq. Disregarding English, I see that you have 2 B’s and the rest as A’s. The Chem B might be forgiving because you had A’s in the higher Chemistry courses. What is not very appealing is the fact that you have no extracurriculars. How many units will you have completed after this Fall semester?

@FlyingTeapot - I’d say your application looks pretty good. You have a high GPA with great extracurriculars. If I were doing the admissions, I’d say you’re in. Just out of curiosity, how many units will you have completed after this Fall semester?

Hey guys, let me know how many units you guys have completed by the end of this Fall 2010 semester.

FlyingTeapot: I think you’re definitely a shoe in. You have a pretty good GPA and good EC’s as well. I really wish my CCC offered an AA in Anthro  Good luck!

ConstableZim: I’m confused. How did you apply but still have 3 semesters left before you’re done? Anyway, I think your GPA is pretty good so far… but you still seem to have a while to go before you hit your needed units. Am I wrong? Definitely work on EC’s as someone else has mentioned, but don’t let them affect your wonderful GPA.

Sidra: It’s awesome to see another English major here. You have an amazing GPA if they don’t count your first semester at a CSU but you also have to consider grade trend if they do and obviously your grade trend is amazing. Good EC’s that pertain to your major as well. Good luck!

Oh, and as of the end of Fall 2010 Semester I have completed 59 units. 14 or 17 units to be completed in the Spring.

Well this makes me feel a lot better. Thanks for the chancing. Have a happy New Year.

@xcaliberse: After the Fall semester, I have about 45 semester units completed.

@xcaliberse: I should have about 68 units done by the spring:

I’ve finished every math class offered, Physics:Mechanics and Electricity magnetism both, general chem 1, both of the english classes that are needed, and a intro computer programming class. These are probably among the most important classes I have taken and all this in just 2 years.

After visiting Berkeley last weekend I would like to asses my chances of being accepted. The campus is amazing and I like the vibe of the city. Thank you in advance for your time.

Major: English
Current School: Los Angeles Valley College (CCC)
GPA: 3.59 (Upward trend the past two semesters)
Major GPA: 4.0
TAP: No, but have a TAG for UC Davis.
IGETC: I will be certified by Spring 2011.
Pre-reqs: I will have them completed by Spring 2011. English is completed already, Math will be completed by Spring.
Units Completed: 44 semester by the end of Fall 2010, 21 planned between Winter and Spring.
Personal Statement: I was very pleased with them, however, I don’t think they were perfect.
EC: 8 years service in the United States Air Force, winner of two campus writing contests and I made the dean’s list a couple of semesters.

Hi, GUYS… Chance me, please.
I am a Math major. I think my transferable GPA is something like 3.93. I already finish my IGETC according to my college policy. However, I took 12 units of them (GE) as credit only. So, here is one of myberkeleyapplication forms…

All UC-transferable Units 71

Row 2: A Units (include fall 2010) 44

Row 5: B Units (include fall 2010) 3

Row 14: In Progress & Credit/Pass Units 24

In Spring, I have 6 units to complete my major requirements, and I plan to take another 6 units for interest development. However, I am not sure whether I should take one more class. I have 12 units(GE classes) taken as credit only. If those transferable GE classes units I took somehow can’t be transferable because I took them as Credit Only, I will be leave with only 59 units. So, I am wondering whether I need to add one more class… If I do add one more class, it will be Physics. However, I really hate the physics intructors in my college. So, what do your guys think? Any comments and advices will be really appreciated…

Hi, I’m only a freshman this year but I just want to see if I’m on the right track. I’m going to Mt. SAC which is a CCC.
