UC Berkeley Fall 2011 Chance thread

@ ArrogantBastard: You’re in.
@ Pino: You’re in. The upward trend is huge at Berkeley.

I’m going to assume lakers is a hs student…lol.

@ LostCollegeBound: You’re probably in at Cal, and definitely in at all the rest.
@ Nukewarm: Missing that Chem requirement may hurt your chances for UCLA. I think you’re in at UCSD and CPSLO…Berkeley and UCLA are reaches just due to your GPA, but I think that you have an okay chance of getting into 1 of them.

Schools
UCLA, Berkeley (TAGing into UCSD)

Major
Political Science

Current School
CCC

GPA/Academic History
Cumulative, 3.37.

Fall 2006-Fall 2007 was at a small, unknown LAC that almost lost it’s accreditation last year. 2.0 with 27 units, unknown how many will transfer. Most courses don’t have direct parallels at UCs. Cumulative GPA assumes all 27 units will be judged transferrable.

Fall 2007-Spring 2009 was part time at a CCC, 15 units total, 3.8 GPA (4 A’s, 1 B). Also working during this period.

Fall 2009-Fall 2010: Full time, including 23 units between January and June 2010. 46 transferrable units, 4.0 GPA. Received two A+'s and an A in Fall 2010.

Spring 2011: No transferrable courses. I will potentially (depending on the LAC courses) have 88 transferrable units after Fall 2010; 90 or more makes me ineligible for San Diego.

Prerequisites
UCLA: All 4, all A’s, 2 of them Honors.
Cal: Both PoliSci, plus the History class, all A’s.

IGETC completed by end of Fall 2010. TAP-certified.

EC/Soft factors
-Provided tutoring in various subjects, as requested by other students. Honors program (TAP).

-Former intern for state assemblyman (both he and his COS are UCLA graduates).
-Staff-level experience on four political campaigns, volunteer-level experience on three more.
-Have given on-record, published statements to area newspapers involving a governmental office.
-Currently Special Projects Coordinator to an elected official who represents 500,000 constituents.

Essays
Strong, in my opinion, but atypical. I wrote them as a narrative. I described some of my more unique experiences in politics, including when I testified against a corrupt elected official in his criminal trial.

My comments
I’m an interesting case. Low overall GPA, but with a very sharp upward trend. It’s not even a trend, really–2.0 at the unknown LAC, then an immediate spike to 3.95 at the CCC, with no real in-between. Very strong major-related work experience. Thoughts?

@gsauer: You are definitey in, and I hope I will become your classmate. I am also a math major  But I only got a 3.93…One B in political science :<

I am feeling so bored this semester. I can’t wait to transfer.

@nick What I find interesting is why your GPA was so low at your previous CCC. If you gave the admissions officers a compelling reason to explain this, I think they’ll forgive you considering how much you’ve improved and also the strength of your major-related work.

I didn’t go to a CCC originally. It was a private, four-year liberal arts college on the east coast, with less than 100 students. It was a completely different environment. Plus, the college entered a period of turmoil the year I started. Most of the faculty have since left or been fired, enrollment has declined by 1/3, and the college’s president was under investigation for embezzlement.

In other words, this was kind of a shady place. As for my own grades… All Freshmen grades were low that year. There are specific reasons I discussed in my application I don’t want to type out here, but the bottom line is I more or less got screwed there.

Like you say, I’m hoping they consider that:
1.) The original grades were at a school completely different from a CCC or UC–it’d almost be like if I got bad grades at a trade school that happened to be accredited
2.) Not only was the school completely different, the school itself was going through some major problems that affected academics among all students.
3.) The poor grades were from 3 years ago.
4.) Since then, I’ve had a nearly perfect record. I didn’t even have an upward trend–At the original college my grades stunk, at a normal CCC they’ve been consistently exceptional.

Will they? Who knows. There are plenty of 4.0 applicants without the blemishes I have. I’m hoping my professional experience puts me over the top–I honestly think I have the most unique work-related life experience of any UC applicant.

Nick, I’m in TAP at Cal and my tap advisor told me my OOSU credits won’t transfer. Yours probably won’t either, especially if they’re from a LAC. She told me for L&S they briefly look at your entire gpa, including non transferrable classes but they make their final decision off transferrable ones.
