UC Berkeley Haas 2018 Transfer Thread

@Ak1097 All will be as it should! If things don’t work out for Berkeley, I’m sure it’ll work out elsewhere, but don’t count yourself out! While I said that we shouldn’t fret about interviews, I do believe having one can only be seen as a positive - they wouldn’t waste time on you if they weren’t interested.

Have you heard from any other schools you’re interested in?

@hopesolo Haas is my first choice, USC Marshall 2nd and Cal Poly Slo/UCI Merage are tied for 3rd. I got into Cal Poly Slo. How about you??

@Ak1097

I applied to most of the UC’s (mainly just to see what would happen) - UCB, UCLA, UCSD UCI, UCSB, UCSC, as well as SJSU and SLO. However, I’m only interested in attending Haas, if I’m not admitted to Haas I’ll likely go to SJSU over the others even if I get in :slight_smile:

Also - I did not get into Cal Poly! So congrats to you and a job well done! I feel like you should be excited if anything, a sign of more good things to come I hope!

@mcmc1234

Wanted to reach out - I’ll be 25 this year, so while I’m not over 25 yet, I’m getting there :slight_smile: Again, based on previous years, an interview or not is not indicative of admission.

If you happen to be over 25 (only assuming you may be, because you asked), Haas and Berkeley in general openly appreciates varying ages. Last years age range of transfers was 17-37.

With age comes a lot of experience, wisdom, and maturity. If you were able to leverage that throughout your application, then I imagine you’d be a worthy applicant.

what do u guys wear to interview

Week 3 interviews? There’s more interviews? Are you asking in like present tense about what we wore? Lol I just wore my college sweatshirt. My friend wore like business casual. In the interview doc they said suits aren’t really necessary since it was up to us. Idk. If there are more interviews then I guess it’s just up to you.

I wore a casual float long sleeve. The alumni that interviewed me said in the beginning, “this is made to be super casual.”

I wore a shirt and tie.

While it did say they didn’t except us in suits and said campus casual was fine, I took it as any other interview and wanted to present it as such. The conversation was casual nonetheless, but the extra step really didn’t take anything else from me.

Really just a personal preference I would assume - present yourself in a way you would want to be received.

@blk college sweatshirt? Hmmm. They gave you a dress code. You didn’t follow it. I assume that was part of the test or why would they put it in.

is it true they reject everyone who takes calc 2 their last spring semester

@neilsola Definitely not true. Where do you get your information…?? lol.

@thi1998
@gool456
@beontheroad021

How did your interviews go? Do you mind sharing your stats?

Anyways, how’s everyone else holding up? @Ak1097 Congrats on Cal Poly!

@neilsola Nope. I called them asked about how many pre-requisites we can take in our last semester. The advisor said no more than one and they allow students to put their hardest class either Stats or Calc 2 in their last semester. He literally said that so I wouldn’t assume it’s going to hurt you. That would honestly be pretty foolish for them to reject people simply because they put Calc 2 or Stats in their last semester.

Now if a student withdrew from any one of those classes and they saw that they put Calc 2/Stats in their last semester intentionally when they could have taken it earlier is a different story. (My Freshman friend is planning to do that but for Econ and that’s definitely not a good thing to do. Once you’re in you’re in.)

@Ohm888 Well at the bottom they said that the interviewers weren’t expecting us to wear suits. So they didn’t really give us a dress code. Campus casual as hopesolo said.

@neilsola
I personally think it depends on the reason why you decided to take Calc 2 during your last semester. If you took Calc 1 during the fall semester of applying then that wouldn’t be a problem. But if they see that you took Calc 1 during your first semester at CC and you waited until the last semester to take Calc 2 then that would probably hurt you. Calc 2 is arguably the hardest pre-req that Haas requires and they want to see if prospective students can handle the intensity of the class. NOW, i don’t know how much of what I said is accurate (maybe none lol) but it just makes sense to me. Also I knew a guy who got a 5 on the AP Calc AB exam but he took Calc 2 in his last semester because he thought it would wreck his GPA. He got rejected from Haas but ended up acing Calc 2. Long story short, if you can finish all the pre-reqs before applying then just get it over it.

@blk I see. I thought they said business casual. My bad…

@blk this last summer I too spoke with an advisor to make sure I was transfer eligible & at at that point I had stats and macroecon planned for my last semester. She never mentioned that this would be a problem so I am currently taking 2 prereqs in my last semester (I opted to take stats my last semester to make it an honors course). I also got selected for an interview which I doubt they would have requested if I was ineligible for transfer. Are you sure about the necessity to only have a maximum of one course for your last CC semester?

I was recently accepted into the College of Chem and am beyond excited to join the Berkeley community. I hope to be admitted into Haas and was wondering if anyone would be willing to offer advice in terms of how to appear competitive in the application process as well as activities that may give me an edge. Thanks in advance:)

@neilsola @BLK @kt_ay

I’m also taking my last two prereqs this semester: managerial accounting and microeconomics, and I interviewed in the first round. I’m transferring in three semesters, and because the two prereqs I’m taking this semester are sequential, I couldn’t take them last fall.

I’m almost positive they don’t disqualify applicants for taking more than one prereq in the spring prior to transferring. However, it would be safe to say that putting the courses off intentionally to preserve a high GPA would be obvious to the admissions committee and the applicant might be considered a risk. Otherwise, if your grade trends are strong and your course planning makes sense, this shouldn’t be an issue.

@CS1211 Congrats on being admitted to Berkeley Chem. While we’d love to help, this is a thread dedicated to current community college students seeking to transfer to Haas.

Although the process may be similar, most of us are not intimate with knowledge of the process to transfer to Haas from within Cal. I recommend searching for another thread that may be dedicated to current Berkeley students.

Best of luck!

How much of an impact do you think the interviews have on admissions?
