I agree. I live in Texas and haven’t visited yet either. My parents don’t have the money to just quickly buy a ticket and get down there for a visit. And since April is the month before AP testing, I’d rather not miss school, so that we can drive down there. I truly think I’ve reached a point where I will only attend UM if all my other schools reject me only because then I’d have no other option. I really like the school, but I don’t have money to fly down there so quickly make my decision and still have money left to pay for a deposit. Also, I imagine if you are like me where your parents won’t let you apply for housing until after you’ve been accepted, then it’s going to be a real struggle to end up in a good dorm.
@RtotheB it doesnt say feb 20 for me, im international but residing in the US, and yeah most of them got accepted but some got deferred, no one said they were rejected
On the other hand, I wouldn’t worry about not being able to visit Miami, the campus is amazing and it would be unlikely you wouldn’t love it. It’s one of the few schools you would be fine going to sight unseen in my opinion. Not much to not like.
@newsie2015 I went to Miami (albeit many moons ago) and I loved it. It is a very pretty place with the palm trees and beautiful buildings. When you walk across campus it is easy to feel like you’re at a tropical resort. It is a great school academically. Miami is a great choice.
i don’t know why miami thinks its so special that it can just do this to its applicants. its not harvard, its not better then any other schools so what gives it the right to be so terrible with its admissions? its beyond just frustrating at this point its absurd.
@Lenalee I visited Pitt since I have a few friends that go there and I loved it! I love the city, I live 20ish minutes outside of Philly so I spend a lot of my weekends in the city. Thats one of my biggest uncertainties about IU, it seems kinda in the middle of nowhere. I’m really into music and I know I’m gonna miss Philly’s music scene so much
Absolutely it is in the middle of nowhere. Not a big city so if that’s important to you then Pitt is a great choice. But Bloomington is very cool and the music scene is good (Bluebird Cafe especially), maybe influenced by the School of Music at IU which is huge. But you’re still in Indiana. No disrespect to my birthplace, but as far as culture, Bloomington is about it. (:
The University of Miami has been my favorite campus by far. You get the big-city atmosphere without losing the sense of safety that a small campus offers. The student body was extremely friendly, and the campus was absolutely beautiful. I agree with @lenalee, even though I believe you should visit any college before you commit to it, the University of Miami would be the one college that you could get away with not visiting.
Just defending Miami here. Saying that it is not better than any other school is a lie. It is ranked in the top #50 in the nation, there are schools that Miami obviously out ranks. And it may be less than Harvard, but the campus atmosphere and beauty might just be #1, depending on your taste. Between all the fountains, Lake Osceola, the palm trees, buildings, and all other aesthetics, the campus is magnificent. I think this is all about being patient. Just do something else, like, study in the meantime. Hovering over the decision page won’t get much accomplished.
I don’t know if I agree with the miami is a campus you could commit too without visiting. I’m from New York and when I visited miami I wasn’t too crazy about the campus. It really depends what you’re into, and what you look for in a campus
The point is UM stated early-February. Today’s the 8th and we still don’t know when decisions will be posted/sent. They’ve soiled their nest when it comes to top students applying after this debacle. I’m not waiting until April decide. We all applied EA for a reason - to get this over and behind us.
I agree with this too. There is almost zero chance that anyone would not like the U Miami campus. (Unless you hate palm trees, green grass, swimming pools and sunshine, in which case you would probably not be applying to Miami!) This is one campus that you can absolutely expect to love. And the neighborhood is great; it’s in a suburban area of Miami and it feels clean and safe. As for the dorms, the U Miami dorms are extremely basic and not in the least bit exciting, so I wouldn’t worry about getting a “good dorm,” as it might not be possible anyways! This is not to say that they are terrible in any way, but my impression was that they were just very bare bones basic. (However, we were a little spoiled by visiting the dorms at U of Alabama and Arizona State University - both schools are recruiting honors kids by offering super nice apartment-style dorms and other perks, as well as great honors programs.) So if you are accepted and can afford it, and if you think Miami is a match, I would advise you to just go for it, sight unseen, since you are pretty much guaranteed to love the campus and surrounding area.
Best of luck to everyone, I know it’s getting frustrating!
