My daughter was accepted yesterday as an International Student (Caribbean). Cumulative 3.85 UW GPA, rigorous course load, amazing extracurriculars and letters of recommendation. Junior-Senior year 4.50 UW GPA. 2060 SAT score. Offered a $72,000 merit based scholarship to attend. She saw her decision at 3:00PM. Two other classmates received deferrals.
I visited UM last spring and the campus was definitely cool but not good enough for me to commit there without visiting. A nice campus isn’t an excuse on how they are leaving us in dark.
I am so sorry if this is a dumb question- I feel like I’m missing something. My dd is also disappointed decisions haven’t been released yet, but what did UM do wrong? The said early February and it is still early February. At least they didn’t accidentally send out acceptances to people that were rejected or something.
@oliver17 they are being very opaque with the whole process. Usually schools give an exact time and date as to when decisions are released, not just a range. Miami is leaving students in the dark.
Yeah people just need to be patient. It is probably just because some of us are seniors and they are being antsy. I mean I got into UCF Honors College. So if I don’t get into UM or UF I would be fine with it. As for others, it sounds like they really want to go there so they are probably having a nervous breakdown @oliver17 . @JerseyGirl1514 Was that 72k total or per year???
You all have to remember they gave a rough estimation of when decisions will be released, and that it is other prospective students that have “hyped up” certain release times and the school hasn’t enticed any disappointment. I know it’s frustrating but unless they fail to release them early this week, there really shouldn’t be any reason to get upset. Best of luck to everyone!
Hmmm. I would be leary of my own kids signing on with out visiting but that’s just me. Both my NJ kids have been spending time in FL annually since they were born and love it. We own a place there in fact. We visited campus with both-one loved it (and applied) and one personally just really disliked it. Try to get a feel online as much as you can if you can’t visit. Ask questions.
@Djone97 Your SAT and GPA are slightly higher than mine (see previous post). I haven’t gotten any notification yet. But my thinking is the AP’s. I took nearly AP offered at my school. I remember UM representatives came to Palm Beach County and I visited them and they said that if your school offers a lot of AP’s they are going to expect that you take a lot of them. Still, 8 is a lot. Idk. What were your AP courses??? It could be that you were out of state possibly. Oh and thanks @JerseyGirl15
Hi @djone97 I think your stats seems more than adequate so it really might be that you haven’t visited. Since you are still in the running and have strong stats, maybe if you get down for a real visit and then email your admissions counselor to let them know how much you loved it and maybe ask a follow up question, that would help. I do think Miami tracks demonstrated interest and even if they didn’t, reaching out to your admissions counselor can only help. Good luck I think you have an excellent shot at getting in RD.
Some food for thought. Unless your stats are considerably worse than the students that were deferred, I would assume no news is good news. Remember, you are notified of Merritt scholarships with your acceptance letter. In the past, they have had problems matching scholarships to the students.
Also, check financial aid status. If you see it, that is a good sign.
I think it is rather simple minded to look at test scores and then automatically assumed that every other aspect of the application was up to Miami’s standards. Because Miami has no supplement, the scrutinize the letters of rec, essay, extracurricular activities, and rigor of your courses. @djone97 Your test scores are high, but they are no where close to being in the 75th percentile for Miami which is a 33 on the ACT and 2200 on the SAT. So if you were deferred, it likely was not due to yield protection or lack of demonstrated interest. Miami is a high match for you and maybe a reach if you are unhooked.
