UT Austin 2011/12 Transfer Guide

anyone been accepted to schools other than COLA?

CHerrybomb — I know some people that have.

What schools Godric? Any McCombs transfer acceptances?

You guys are making me nervous! Glad to hear you got in though, congratulations!

I’m a bit more fearful for my prospects, however, because I found that my transfer GPA lowered from what it was at my first school, to a 3.22, since apparently they didn’t count some courses. I had a 3.34, I believe, since I graduated cum laude and was close to being magna cum laude.

However, I already have a bachelors degree from one of those super-expensive private east coast schools, so I’m transferring with a little over 120 hours. My major was obscure and I didn’t actually enjoy it much. I’m trying to get a BS from UT in astronomy/physics; pre-college science was always my strongest subject and I spend most of my free time reading about it and learning what I can. Big mistake to be afraid of math and not major in physics or something. I’d just do a masters but I have essentially no prereqs, if I got the prereqs it’d be another degree entirely, so going for the 2nd bachelors. I believe I have strong essays & recs, and I also completed a senior thesis.

Really hoping to get in - if I don’t, I’ll have to hope I can find a job while taking Calc 1 & maybe calc 2 at a community college & appeal after I get those credits. Hoping to catch a break with UT; I’m 100% positive I can do well - if I get in.

Thanks Inmotion12, and congrats!!

@futurelonghorn92, I feel your pain.

Has anyone heard of folks getting accepted to or rejected from Communications? I am starting to worry, as that was my first choice. That school is more competitive than COLA and all of the folks posting on here who have been accepted to COLA have a much higher GPA than I do. I was thinking that I was a shoe in for COLA and had an okay chance for Communications. Now I am not so confident.

What really sucks is that even if I make A’s in the rest of my 60 hours at ACC (I have 36 hrs completed with a 3.5, not including Spring 2011), I will only have a 3.6 or so. I have made all A’s except for 2 C’s and a D from when I first started ACC almost 10 years ago. I don’t have a lot of regrets in life, but slacking off in school when I was younger is definitely one of them.

I wish I could just find out already and get the mini-heart-attack over with, so I can move forward. I hate this standstill caused by the waiting game.

@rgalvanatx I wrote the third essay explaining why I had a handful of bad grades ( My Dad had a heart attack my second semester back at school and made I a C and B’s plus dropped a course… I had a 4.0 until then, now I have a 3.7) … The admissions people are the ones that suggested that i do that.

That is the only thing that i think is nice about this whole process is that UT takes in to consideration when we apply… So the fact that I have PTA and help coach my daughters sports teams as activities on my resume instead of NHS or swim team captain at my high school are not looked down on, just considered differently.

On the flip side of that, the uncertainty of getting accepted is growing immense and driving my insane!

@lindsbb, I hear you, I am counting on the Statement of Purpose essay to be my saving grace in spite of my not-so-spectacular GPA. I told them that when I was younger, I had no direction or motivation because I didn’t think I needed school at all, but after a few years working as a writer and experiencing success I realized that a formal education was the best way to cultivate my natural talents.

I have read in their “What We Consider” page that they look at qualities that “would enhance a department or college”. I am hoping that they will appreciate the fact that I have proved myself as a professional writer and take into consideration the fact that I already have experience that most people don’t obtain until after they receive a degree. Not to mention the fact that there is an obvious trend in my transcript. I re-enrolled at ACC last year after a 4-year hiatus, took 11 classes over the course of 2010, and made A’s in everything except for a C in the one math class that was required for my program. I also volunteered for at least 100 hours last year and received fantastic recommendations from professors who can attest to my excellence as a student and as a writer.

Anyway, I feel like I am sort of pleading my case to you guys. Haha. If I have learned anything, it’s that you can’t change the mistakes you have made in the past (grades or otherwise) and you just have to do your best going forward and roll with the punches. ACC and TX State both calculate my GPA as 3.82 so if for some reason I am not up to UT Austin’s standards for my undergrad, I will get my degree from somewhere else. Maybe I can get my master’s from UT.

Of course all of that depends on what they decide!

@rgalvanatx what major did you apply for? Im trying for COLA in English and Writing (have to double major to get my 60 hours in house) and then want try for my MFA in creative writing. And I feel ya’ on rolling with the punches, right now I just want a definitive yes or no so I can get the ball rolling for the fall either at UT or TxState ( I got my acceptance from there two weeks after applying!)

@lindsbibb My first choice was Communications Pre-Journalism and my second choice was COLA Undeclared. I didn’t apply anywhere else for this go-around. If I don’t get in, I think I will use Summer and Fall to finish up my core 60 hours at ACC. (I only have Spanish III and IV, a Biology class, and a Geography class left.) Then I will probably apply to UT again (after bumping my GPA up a little more) and TX State.

The main reason I didn’t apply to TX State this time is I sold my car when I went back to school, so commuting from Austin to San Marcos would be difficult. I was hoping to just be able to keep using CapMetro throughout my undergrad, but I may have to suck it up and just buy another car.

@Jammy

Sorry I can’t be of any help about McCombs, I only hear about COLA stats. I’m sure if you go into the 2009 and 2010 UT Austin transfer thread, you’ll be able to find something.

Best of luck!

Has everyone else received an email regarding UT getting the FAFSA? I just got one but no update on my status. Thanks.

Got one. The aid office told me I’ll receive a package in two week after I turn in my other forms.

Does getting an email about the FAFSA now indicate anything? Or is it just a coincidence that acceptances are starting to trickle out? How long after you received the FAFSA email did you get in? Congratulations by the way!

Jungleman I got an email from UT about FASFA but no update. It states that it wont be reviewed until UT makes a decision. So I dont think this means anything yet. Good luck. Anyone hear from college of communication?

@BigBH2011

No doubt. I’m surprised they haven’t accepted you yet. A few folks on here got accepted to COLA and it sounds like they started at the top GPAs and are working their way down.

I feel kinda dumb asking, but what is COLA?
