Has anyone heard about Echols?
@jamesjunkers do you know about merit awards from UVA, especially those for international students?
@tranquility145, UVa only has one merit award, the Jefferson Scholarship, which requires a separate application, which was due long ago.
(PS - I got deferred people, don’t ask me questions :P)
The Jefferson Scholarship is awarded by an alumni organization, not by the University itself. Jefferson Scholars must be nominated by their High Schools, you cannot apply directly.
In case anyone is curious, I compared this year’s stats to last year’s – http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/18036206/#Comment_18036206
Hi everyone, just a quick question, how important are mid-year grades? Will they make or break me as a candidate (especially if they were really good) during the regular admissions cycle? Anyways best of luck to everyone who was deferred and congrats to everyone who was accepted.
If you were deferred, they are extremely important. They won’t by the self make or break you, but they have a very large impact.
I have a question. In my online acceptance letter, it stated after the sentence informing me of snail mail decision, that my decision came with specific conditions. Does anyone know what that means?
We are in NJ and the snail mail letter has still not arrived. Seems like a long time to get here from VA. Have most accepted students received this?
We are still waiting for the envelop in VA.
Has anyone heard about the Echols and Rodmans scholars?
Living in AZ and still haven’t got the welcome packet yet. The anticipation is killing me!
@andrewswill my acceptance online said it came with “important enclosures” I don’t know if that is what you are referring to but “conditions” probably means you have to maintain your high academic standard and still graduate on time. That is just a guess however. I am OOS and still have not received a snail mail acceptance.
OOS and no packet yet.
In response to an earlier comment, there are some modest merit awards that are available at UVa to upperclassmen in specific academic programs. However, for the most part, there is very little merit aid other than Jefferson.
I’ve often felt that everyone would be better served if the Jefferson scholarships would be 50% scholarships given to twice as many students. Instead, they may be giving a free education to someone who financially could afford much of the cost. As a result, the Jefferson scholarships may just end up funding the student’s new Audi.
The easiest merit scholarships to win are ones given out through your high school and through local civic organizations. However, the amounts are usually not large, and they often are only good for one year.
Most middle-income out of state US students will be eligible for substantial need-based aid from UVa.
I’m OOS and still haven’t received an acceptance packet. I thought I would get it today but it still hasn’t come. Anyone else?
Still hasn’t come to our house either, and we are in state. I wouldn’t worry about it.
I haven’t gotten anything yet either. I agree with @oldUVAgrad, seems like we’re all in the same boat.
Thanks for the in state update! OOS and nothing here either. Maybe they mail today?
I was tired of guessing so I called the admissions office today and was told that acceptance letters were mailed on Monday. When I mentioned we had not received anything here in California, I was told it was most likely due to weather. Also asked about Echols. Was told that the decisions have NOT been mailed yet. Also, and this may have already been covered, EA students who do not receive an Echols offer now can still receive one after the RD round.
Received my acceptance package today in Southern VA. Not much to it but still hype!
